Section 01
Making a link worse
Three dials, and why they are separate. Every entry is one layer, one mechanism, or one reason the delay is there.
- 01
Throughput
How much can move per second is the dial everyone reaches for first, and the one that explains the least on its own.
- 02
Added latency
Delay applied to every packet is a different quantity from capacity, and it is usually the one that makes software feel broken.
- 03
Loss and reordering
Dropping packets and delivering them out of order produce different failures, and software that survives one often fails the other.
- 04
Repeatability
A test you cannot run twice the same way is an anecdote; the point of a shaper is that the bad link is identical each time.
